Rationale
Many people are unconvinced that the job market has changed. They’re unconvinced that they need to give in to “personal branding.” Is this you?
Think about the companies who send you junk mail, most of which you don’t read. Think about TV commercials that you change channels to avoid, or skip over on your DVR. If you send your resume in response to a job posting, you’re doing the same thing!
This blog started with a handful of anecdotal posts intended to explain what’s happening to job search in the 21st century, the impact of the tools now available to us, and why creating your personal brand online and offline is essential to your success. I hope a few of these help explain why this topic is so important to your future:
- The Resume Is Dying explains how technology is quickly making the resume itself obsolete.
- Modern Tactics in Career Advancement – Part 1 suggests that sending a resume to a job listing is simply not the behavior of a well-connected top performer.
- Personal Branding: Only good for jobs? illustrates the benefits that a solid personal branding can provide.
- Proactive Networking for Jobs shows how you can conduct online brand building in concert with your offline activities, in order to reach objectives.
- Twitter has Life-Changing Power! suggests that Twitter is not just a promotional tool, but can provide truly revolutionary outcomes.
- Social Media: There’s Nothing of Value Out There! addresses the social media skeptic.
- Body Language and the Online Persona asserts that communication skills are critical for reinforcing your brand when you meet people offline. This topic was addressed again in Modern Tactics in Career Advancement – Part 2.
